As you may has seen vineyards all over Australia have been busy putting nets over the vines for the last few months to keep the birds out of our precious grapes. This is so we can enjoy the best quality wines that Australia can offer, free of disease and bird damage. For those vineyards that are lucky enough to not have neighbors, air guns are often used to scare the birds away as a cheaper alternative, however that will not work well for us with horses in the surrounding paddocks.
The great news is we are the first vineyard in Australia to trial the Agrilaser Autonomic technology that was sent all the way from the Netherlands. It uses a laser beam to project what appears to be a large stick moving through the vineyard. The laser beam is not harmful to animals or birds eyes and as such there is no actual risk to the health of the bird. The great thing about this technology is I will no longer have the sad job of walking through the vineyard and finding trapped and distressed birds stuck in the nets. They will simply go to somewhere else to find food and our precious grapes will remain untouched by birds.

What a fabulous time we had at the Food and Wine Expo held at the National Convention Centre over the weekend. It was a fun and busy three days of wine, wine and food! We met a lot of people and made some new friends. We officially launched our 2015 Pepper & Ace Red and we must say, it was our most popular wine of the weekend!
One of the highlights was getting to rub shoulders with celebrity chef Ben Milbourne. We learnt that he has a vineyard in Tassie, so we swapped tales of the vineyard life. He tasted all of our wine and he was very impressed with the Riesling and Pepper and Ace red.

We have had a lot of fun over the last few months welcoming visitors to our vineyard for wine tours. It has been great enjoying the sunshine and watching the vineyard again spring into action full of flowers and green leaves, while sampling the 2015 Sauvingnon Blanc and Riesling.
You can see from the pictures that every tour has been a little different from tastings in the cellar, beautiful sunny days spent out in the middle of the vineyard (with a Halloween theme) and the latest edition of selfies with a drone.

The pruning for this year is almost complete and we are down to the last block (Pinot Noir) which is always complicated to prune as it tends to grow a bit more like a wild weed.
This year a big thank you goes out to Pete (Dad) for his hard work and for only cutting four of the cordon wires this year.
Also a shout out to Meryl and Simon that have been touring Australia from Northern Ireland. They have been staying with us for the past few weeks helping complete the pruning, other vineyard maintenance and hanging out with the vineyard dogs.

Tonight was the presentation night for the 2014 Canberra Regional Wine Show. Once again I was reminded of why operating a vineyard is such a gruelling job, as we were forced to spend an hour tasting the wine Canberra had to offer while waiting for Katie Gallagher to arrive and present the trophies.
It was very exciting to see the Summerhill Road label on presentation with the other wines. We couldn’t help but take a few selfies of our bottle on show.
